Short Stories and Poetry

Short stories and poetry will be combined in this unit. We will read selections from Poe and some contemporary pieces as well. Students will be reading and writing on a regular basis.

Fahrenheit 451 & Anthem

These texts are read in succession and we will do much comparison and contrast in this unit. We will also incorporate non-fiction text and current events.

By practicing analysis, we will be discovering the art of critical thinking and problem solving. These skills will be beneficial to you in this course, as well as others.

Reading Non-Fiction

The State of Washington has adopted the Common Core State Standards (see resources page for more details). They require that students read more non-fiction and informational text. I have developed a way for this to be on-going throuhgout the year.

Students will be selecting and reading the news. We will analyze and decipher the author's tone, purpose, and word choice among other things. It is my hope that we learn to be critical thinkers about the texts we read.
